Marking documents as drafts, confidential, or yours
A watermark is a visible stamp — usually diagonal text across the page — that tells anyone looking at the document something important about its status. 'DRAFT' warns that the content is not final. 'CONFIDENTIAL' signals restricted distribution. A company name or logo asserts ownership. Without these markers, a draft circulated for review can be mistaken for the final version, and a confidential report forwarded casually has no visual reminder of its sensitivity.
This tool adds a text watermark to every page of your PDF. You type the text, pick a colour, set the opacity, choose the angle and size, and download the result. The watermark is baked into the page content — it is not a viewer annotation that disappears when printed or opened in a different app.
How the watermarking works
The tool draws the watermark text onto each page at the position and angle you specified, using the colour and opacity you chose. The text is rendered as a transparent overlay on top of the existing content, so the underlying document remains readable. Nothing else on the page is modified — fonts, images, and layout are untouched.
Because the watermark is part of the page content (not metadata or an annotation layer), it is visible in every viewer, in print, and in screenshots. This makes it more durable than annotation-based watermarks that some readers strip out. The trade-off is that it cannot be toggled off by the viewer — once stamped, it is permanent in that copy of the file.
Practical uses and advice
Law firms watermark draft contracts so opposing counsel knows the version is not final. Marketing teams stamp 'SAMPLE' on preview versions of brochures sent to clients for approval. Architects mark drawing sets as 'FOR REVIEW ONLY' before issuing them to contractors. Teachers watermark answer keys so leaked copies are immediately identifiable.
For readability, keep the opacity low enough that the body text underneath is still comfortable to read — 15–25% works well for most documents. Choose a colour that contrasts with the page background without clashing with the content. And if the document is truly sensitive, pair the watermark with password protection using the Protect PDF tool so the file cannot be opened without authorisation.

Can I make the watermark semi-transparent?
Yes. The opacity slider lets you make the watermark subtle (10–20% for a light background tint) or bold (70–100% for a clear 'DRAFT' or 'CONFIDENTIAL' stamp). Adjust it until the text beneath stays readable.
Will the watermark appear on every page?
Yes, by default. The watermark is stamped on every page of the document in the same position with the same style.
Can someone remove the watermark later?
The watermark is drawn directly onto the page content. Casual users cannot remove it, but someone with a PDF editor could potentially edit the page. For stronger protection, consider password-protecting the PDF after watermarking.
Is the process private?
Yes. The watermark is applied entirely in your browser. Your document is never uploaded to any server.
