Aadhaar and PAN numbers end up in an enormous number of everyday documents — rental agreements, loan and job applications, KYC forms, GST paperwork, admission files, and countless PDFs that get emailed, uploaded to portals, and forwarded onward. Every one of those copies is a place your identity number can leak. The government's own guidance is to share a masked Aadhaar wherever possible, showing only the last four digits, precisely because a full Aadhaar or PAN in the wrong hands is a real fraud and identity-theft risk.
This tool makes that safe and quick. Drop in a PDF and it scans the text for Aadhaar and PAN numbers, shows you exactly what it found, and permanently blacks out the ones you choose. Precise, checksum-verified detection — no guesswork, no AI
Detection is fully deterministic. An Aadhaar number is not just any twelve digits: it ends in a Verhoeff checksum digit that must be mathematically consistent with the rest of the number. The tool computes that checksum for every twelve-digit candidate it finds and only flags the ones that pass, which filters out invoice numbers, reference codes, and other long numbers that would otherwise trigger false alarms. It also requires the leading digit to be in the 2–9 range that real Aadhaar numbers use.
PAN detection is just as strict: the tool looks for the exact PAN shape — five letters, four digits, and a final letter — and checks that the fourth character is a valid holder-type code. None of this involves a language model or a remote service; it is plain arithmetic and pattern matching running in your browser. Crucially, the tool shows you every match for review before touching the document, so you stay in control and can deselect anything that should remain — for example, a number that belongs in the document on purpose.
True removal, and why it all stays on your device
When you apply the mask, pages that contain a selected number are flattened to an image with the digits painted over in black, and that flattened page replaces the original. The result is not a black box sitting on top of still-present text — the digits are genuinely gone from the file, so they cannot be selected, copied, searched, or recovered later. Pages without any matches are left untouched and fully intact, keeping their selectable text and sharp vector quality.
Handling ID documents on a stranger's server is exactly the risk you are trying to avoid, so this tool never uploads anything. Your PDF is opened, scanned, and masked entirely within your browser, and the masked copy is generated locally for you to download. For the rare case where a number lives inside a scanned image rather than real text, the tool detects that there is no text layer and offers a one-click handoff to OCR so you can add one and try again — or you can fall back to the manual Redact PDF tool. How does it avoid flagging random 12-digit numbers as Aadhaar?
Every Aadhaar number carries a built-in Verhoeff checksum. The tool validates that checksum (and that the number starts with 2–9, as real Aadhaar numbers do), so ordinary 12-digit strings like order IDs or long reference numbers are not mistaken for Aadhaar. PAN numbers are matched against the exact ABCDE1234F format, including a valid holder-type letter.
Is the number actually removed, or just covered with a black box?
Actually removed. Pages with a match are flattened to an image with the number blacked out, so the underlying digits are gone from the file — no one can select, copy, or recover them, unlike a black rectangle drawn on top of live text.
What does 'keep last 4 digits' do?
It produces a UIDAI-style masked Aadhaar, where only the final four digits stay visible (XXXX XXXX 1234) and the rest is blacked out. This is the form officially encouraged for sharing. PAN numbers are always hidden in full because there is no standard partial-mask format for them.
It didn't find the number on my scanned card — why?
A scanned Aadhaar or PAN card is a picture, not text, so there is nothing to detect. Run the file through OCR first to add a text layer — the tool offers a one-click handoff — or use the manual Redact PDF tool to black the number out by hand.
Is my ID document uploaded anywhere?
No. Detection and masking both run entirely inside your browser. Your Aadhaar, your PAN, and the whole document never leave your device — which is exactly what you want for something this sensitive.
