Why this stays completely private
Most 'text to speech' websites work by uploading your document to a server, generating an audio file there, and sending it back. That means your document — which might be a private contract, a medical letter, a bank statement, or unpublished writing — leaves your device and sits on someone else's computer. For anything confidential, that is a real problem.
This tool works differently. It uses the Web Speech API, a speech engine that is built directly into modern browsers and runs on your own device. Why can't it read my scanned PDF?
A scanned PDF is a picture of text, not actual text, so there is nothing to read aloud. Run it through the OCR tool first to add a real text layer — the tool offers a one-click handoff to do exactly that — then come back and listen.
Which voices are available?
The available voices come from your operating system and browser, so the list varies by device. Desktop Chrome and Edge, Android, macOS, and iOS all ship several voices in different languages and accents. You pick from whatever your device provides.
Can I download the audio as an MP3?
Not currently. Browsers speak the text live rather than producing a saved audio file, so there is no MP3 to download — but you can listen as many times as you like, and it works offline once the page has loaded.
Does it work on my phone?
